Driving from Liberia airport to Tamarindo

If you’re landing in Costa Rica at the Liberia International Airport, getting to Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas should take you about one hour by car.

When you’re leaving the airport area, you’ll come to the end of the airport road where it meets the main highway. Turn right. Follow signs to Tamarindo from here, passing several towns on the way, called Guardia, Palmira and Filadelfia. After about 25 minutes, you’ll come to a larger town called Belen. On your right, under some trees, you’ll see a series of green signs to several cities, including Tamarindo. At the intersection before the big gas station, turn right. Continue for about 22 km (14 miles) through Santa Ana to Huacas. In Huacas, take the left hand turn by following signs to Tamarindo. Drive 10 more minutes to the town of Villareal, where you’ll find another sign indicating a right-hand turn to Tamarindo. Take the right, and drive another few minutes until you get to Tamarindo. In the center of town, you’ll see a road to the left across from Le Beach Club – turn here to go up the hill. The road forks again in front of a tall white condo building. Here, go right and pass by the Super 2001 grocery store. This road takes you to Playa Langosta. Drive for approximately 3 minutes until you see the rock sign with gold writing that says CALA LUNA. Turn right in front of the sign and continue a few meters/yards until you see the entrance to the hotel lobby on your left. Our staff here will help you park.

Driving from San Jose to Tamarindo

If you’re driving from Costa Rica’s capital city of San Jose to Tamarindo, you can expect the journey to take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic. On the way, you’ll find plenty of gas stations to fill up the tank and sodas or restaurants to eat at.

From San Jose, take highway 27 out of the city heading west. Have some change in the car, especially 100 colones coins, to pay the toll booths on the way out. Drive for about 100 km (75 miles), passing the city of Caldera on the way, to the exit to Barrancas. Now follow the signs to enter the Pan American Highway (highway 1) and look for signs to the town of Limonal, and then the Puente de la Amistad (Amistad bridge). Cross the large bridge over the Tempisque River to the other side.

From here, you can follow signs to Nicoya, then to Santa Cruz. Just after Santa Cruz, you’ll see a sign directing you to turn left to Tamarindo. We recommend you ignore this sign and continue straight instead (that road is unpaved and very dusty and bumpy). Continue to the town of Belen, where you’ll find another sign to turn left to Tamarindo. Take this turn, then continue following the signs that direct you to Tamarindo (you’ll turn left in the town of Huacas, and right once you’re in Villareal). Once you arrive in Tamarindo, you’ll see a road to the left across from Le Beach Club – turn here to go up the hill. The road forks again across from a tall white condo building. Here, stay to the right. This road takes you to Playa Langosta – pass by Langosta Beach Club on the way. Drive for approximately 3 minutes until you see the rock sign with gold writing that says CALA LUNA. Driving from Arenal/La Fortuna to Tamarindo

The driving time from Arenal volcano and the town of La Fortuna to Tamarindo is between 3 and 4 hours, depending on traffic.

From La Fortuna town, drive out of town on the main highway. You’ll take the winding road that follows the edge of Lake Arenal for about 45 minutes into the town of Tilaran, where you’ll make a sharp right-hand turn to stay on the highway. Continue until you arrive at the town of Cañas, and follow signs to Liberia. In the center of Liberia at the main intersection, turn left to take the highway towards Santa Cruz and Tamarindo. After about 25 minutes, you’ll come to a larger town called Belen – on your right, you’ll see a series of green signs under some trees pointing you to several cities, including Tamarindo. Driving from Monteverde to Tamarindo

The drive time between Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica and Tamarindo is about 3 or 3.5 hours.

Follow the winding mountain road out of town heading west for about 30 km (19 miles) then go left to stay on highway 146. Pass through the town of Juntas and continue until you hit highway 1, or the Pan American Highway. Go right on the highway and drive about 4 km (2 miles) to the Shell gas station, and turn left onto the highway. This road takes you to the Puente de la Amistad (Amistad bridge) to cross the Tempisque River. When you intersect with another highway in Mansion, take the right by following signs to Nicoya, then to Santa Cruz. Just after Santa Cruz, you’ll see a sign directing you to turn left to get to Tamarindo. We recommend you ignore this sign and continue straight instead (that road is unpaved and very dusty and bumpy). Continue to the town of Belen, where you’ll find another sign to turn off to Tamarindo. Take this turn, then continue following the signs that direct you to Tamarindo. Once you arrive in the Tamarindo, you’ll see a paved road to the left that goes up a hill – turn onto this road. The road forks again in front of a tall white condo building. Here, stay right. Driving from Manuel Antonio to Tamarindo

From Manuel Antonio National Park and the town of Quepos, drive north on highway 34 toward Tamarindo. You’ll follow the coastal highway for about 100 km (62 miles) until you intersect with highway 27. Take the ramp and head west toward Puntarenas for about 30 km (19 miles) to the Pan American Highway (highway 1). Merge onto highway 1 and continue to the town of Limonal. Across from the Shell gas station, turn left. This road takes you to the Puente de la Amistad (Amistad bridge) and across the Tempisque River. When you intersect with another highway in Mansion, go right by following signs to Nicoya, then to Santa Cruz. Just after Santa Cruz, there is a sign directing you to turn left to Tamarindo. We recommend you continue straight instead (that road is unpaved and very bumpy). Drive until you reach the town of Belen, where you’ll find another sign to turn off to Tamarindo near a big gas station. Take this left hand turn, then continue following the signs that direct you to Tamarindo, turning left in Huacas and right in Villareal. Once you arrive in the town of Tamarindo, you’ll see a paved road on your left that goes up a slight hill – turn here and pass by a plaza with the BAC bank on your left. The road forks again in front of a tall white condominium. Here, stay right to drive to Playa Langosta. Continue for about 3 minutes until you see the rock sign with gold writing that says CALA LUNA. Turn right in front of the sign and continue a few meters/yards until you see the entrance to the hotel lobby on your left. Our staff here will help you park.
