Tamarindo: a beautiful beach town on the Costa Rican coast
Tamarindo is a quaint, friendly beach town on Costa Rica’s north Pacific coast. It’s a place that has stayed true to its Costa Rican culture while welcoming droves of visitors from around the world every year, who travel here for eco-tourism, relaxation, surf and fun. Safe, kid-friendly and centrally located for easy access to volcanoes, waterfalls, lakes, rivers and national parks, it’s no wonder Tamarindo’s tourism industry has been booming in recent years, bringing with it an influx of excellent restaurants and boutique-style shops featuring local designers to round out the experience.
It’s clear the surf culture of Tamarindo has stayed strong – the laid-back vibe here is visible in the smiling faces and friendliness of the locals. It’s infectious too, leaving visitors feeling the “pura vida” lifestyle during their stay and after. The beach, or “playa” in Spanish, is home to some of the top surf breaks in the country, attracting pro surfers, beginners and everything in between. The long, clean beach is great for watching the sunset, though many opt to watch this natural phenomenon from one of the many beachfront bars and restaurants with a cocktail in hand.
Here, the beachfront road is lined with cafes, restaurants, boutiques, vendor stalls, live music and surf shops. Tamarindo is stocked with all the services and entertainment you could need to make a visit here comfortable, including a healthy nightlife, excellent restaurants serving food from around the world, supermarkets, several banks, pharmacies and clinics, a post office, internet cafes and yoga studios, all within walking distance.
Tamarindo is one of the most popular destinations in the province of Guanacaste, for tourists from abroad as well as for Costa Ricans who escape the harried life of the capital, San Jose, to get some sunshine and beach time in. Just one hour’s drive from Liberia International Airport, it’s the ultimate place to hang out on the beach, play in the waves, watch incredible sunsets and bask in the general glory of Costa Rican life.
Enjoy the serenity of Playa Langosta’s pristine beach
Just three minutes’ drive from Tamarindo is the quiet, upscale beach community of Playa Langosta, which is home to Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas. Close enough to the beach town of Tamarindo to have easy access to all the services, but far enough away that you never feel crowded by the bustle of tourists and raucous nightlife, Playa Langosta is an idyllic setting. The beach here is lined by a mangrove forest that separates development from the sand, leaving you feeling that you’ve found a slice of untouched paradise as you walk the white sandy shoreline.
The community of Langosta has its own little supermarket and sports bar, but is otherwise very peaceful day and night. Its surf break located near the estuary, which is just a few steps from Cala Luna, is the home break for a dedicated following of surfers who are a delight to watch from shore. In the estuary itself, flocks of white seabirds settle on the surface of the water before taking off in spectacular flight that makes for breathtaking photos. The same goes for the heart-stopping sunsets here. Every evening, the sun sinks into the Pacific here, illuminating the sky in bright pink and orange hues, or in soft pastels. It’s a sight not to be missed.
The secluded section of beach, accessed by a short, charming pathway from Cala Luna, is in our opinion the best part of Playa Langosta. Along the shoreline are tide pools created by black lava rock deposits, where tiny specimens of marine life thrive. The rock also creates calm little lagoons sheltered from the waves farther out, which are perfect for swimming or floating under the warm sun. The sand here is immaculately clean and soft, and you may find you’ll rarely have to share it with anyone else.
A destination with everything to offer
With year-round incredible weather delivering warm sunny days and slightly cooler nights, plus quick access to the country’s best eco-tourism attractions and the international airport in Liberia, it’s a given that the Tamarindo-Langosta area has become such a hot spot for tourists. At Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas in Playa Langosta, you get the best of both worlds, being just a short distance from the busy beach town of Tamarindo, while enjoying the seclusion and peace of Langosta, which caters to a more affluent crowd. Both communities are home to incredible surf and beautiful beaches and sunsets, and Cala Luna puts you in the heart of it all.
